(2 bars) set (2 bars) cross up (2 bars) cast to 2nd place opposite side (8 bars) petronella turn four times (ending in 2nd place opposite side) (8 bars) figure of eight across (cast up (to 1st place opposite side); cross down (to 2nd place own side); cast up (to 1st place own side); cross down (to 2nd place opposite side)) Notes for teaching: It may be useful to begin with an exercise in which 4 dancers stand in a diamond/square (say, 2s in their own places, 1L below them facing up, 1M above them facing down) and dance simultaneous petronella turns (8 bars to dance 4 petronella turns around in a ring back to where they started). To teach the fugal sequence, it may be helpful to practise in a 2C set with initially only the 1s dancing (the 2s stepping up on bars 3--4/5--6 but otherwise remaining still; note, however, this makes the path of the figure of eight longer). The fourth petronella turn could be replaced with set advancing so that the dancer is already facing out ready for the cast.
